Peter Drucker is regarded as the father of modern management, and I consider myself fortunate to have been introduced to his books during my college years. Reading good books makes life a bit less interesting as you’re not surprised by the news like Agile job cuts, you actually expect that “…Instead of having “distinct roles focused on agile delivery,” existing engineering teams and product managers will “share accountability for agile ceremonies, routines, and practices.”
Towards the end of his career back in 1993 Drucker wrote Post-Capitalist Society, a unique collection of predictions that extended beyond just management.
“We will increasingly see organizations operate like the jazz combo, in which leadership within the team shifts with the specific assignment and is independent of the ‘rank’ of each member… This shift will raise tremendous problems of motivation, of reward, of recognition.“
There are numerous Agile courses and certifications abound, but I consider ICAgile as the better one and I strive to get all my team members certified whenever there is a possibility. What sets ICAgile apart is its emphasis on Agile as a state of mind rather than a mere job or role, aligning well with Drucker’s quote above.
Cycling has taught me many things, but the concept of a peloton stands out. Riders in the peloton take turns leading at the front, breaking the wind for those behind them. This rotation enables the team to maintain higher speeds with less effort.
Scrum master Agile delivery lead role in my teams is rotational. Team members take turns leading Agile ceremonies, routines and practices. Those are the Peloton Teams, just as Drucker envisioned.
